The Collegiate Association for Artists of Color supports POC students pursuing higher education in the arts. We strive to create a space in which our education amplifies our stories and cultures. We strive to make education an inclusive and positive experience for students of color. And above all, we strive to build a supportive community for us—by us.
“Being an Afro-Latina female multi-hyphenate motivates me to be a part of caac and what we represent; a gateway for, and bridge to possibilities. we all show up for each other, openly communicating when assistance is needed. There’s a beauty in looking forward to work when you know that there are like minded people willing to put in just as much positive energy, and passion into moving forward with an ever expanding vision.”
“I would tell my younger self to see rest and restoration as essential to liberation work. Decolonize your mind as soon as you can understand the concept of colonization. Never be slowed down by those who have yet to wake up from their lethargic state of mind. Practice disruption. Along with your love, your anger is necessary and beautiful.”

“To me, creativity is all about giving power to the people. Growing up, the systemic oppression of this world often hindered my own growth, and so I will work to ensure that the next generation has the adequate representation and resources to be themselves. When breaking down these barriers that society has imposed upon people of color, we must work to replace them with stories and examples of our joy, success, and most importantly - our freedom. “I thrive creatively when I am surrounded by other artists who share the same goals as me and believe in my work just as much as I believe in theirs. Art that is beautiful and impactful is never made all by yourself and the way we currently view art and reward individual artists for huge feats erases the work that took hundreds, if not thousands, of people to make. A part of my motivation working with C.A.A.C. is to bridge the divide between creation and consumption and give voice to all the young artists in the middle of that divide.”

We continue to produce meaningful and laborious work for this organization because we all came together to realize that our voices matter and have always mattered. While most spaces were not historically made for us, our art is what belongs to us. The autonomy to take up space for ourselves and our art feels urgent. “I was the only person of color on my dance team for many years growing up. I wanted to work with C.A.A.C. to help uplift the voices of other artists of color, and make space for them in the creative world.”
“Being a part of caac means that i can use my skills to give back to my own community & support other BIPOC individuals! My motivation to work with caac comes from not only the C.A.A.C. community, but the C.A.A.C. staff that I work with; everyone on the team strives to elevate each other to a higher level creatively.”

“Growing up as a half-Filipina, I’ve struggled to see myself on a professional music stage in more ways than one. C.A.A.C provides an opportunity to help artists see where they belong, and support to those who want to pursue their art. I think it is incredibly exciting to work on putting together these opportunities so that one day children similar to myself can find themselves on stage.”
